From here in Australia, I found Bob’s National Right to Read website when I was desperate for help for my son and it set me on the right path to fixing the problem. He helped me enormously without, at the time, knowing me or anything about me.
I will always be grateful.

New addition to PISA test
We should be aware that there is a new addition to this years’ PISA test, see Opinion piece from Kevin Donnally in The Australian below. Competence in basics is central to a well-rounded education • KEVIN DONNELLY • The Australian • 12:00AM March 14, 2018 One of the more vacuous education cliches do...

common comments by australian teachers
I posted an answer on another forum in response to a teacher who made a number of points about what's needed to improve our schools and schooling. I've pasted my response below because I think that many teachers hold the same views which I believe are in error. For example, blaming politicians. COAG...

Interesting US Supreme Court decision
Interesting US Court decision. As I understand it, in the first case, the Judge ruled that all a school has to provide a disabled child is an education that is merely more than minimal and the US Supreme Court just over ruled this, stating “a student offered an educational program providing ‘merely ...

Re: Highly recommended for all: 'Clarry and the Little White Cloud' by Fay Tran
I think Fay Tran's, "Clarry and the Little White Cloud" should be in everywhere there are children struggling to learn to read. I highly recommend those who work in the remedial reading area have this book in their waiting room for parents and carers to read to get that light bulb moment o...

Re: Direct Instruction in Good to Great schools
HI Dick, I'm not sure I understand your point. To clarify, Australian Indigenous students in remote communities like Cape York are our most disadvantaged. They struggle with multiple issues like family dysfunction, poor health care and nutrition, truancy, non-English speaking and so on. Over the las...

Direct Instruction in Good to Great schools
Quote below from John Hattie’s University of Melbourne lecture which I think is worth noting. “... For example, Noel Pearson’s “Good to Great” schools have made appreciable differences to the learning lives of Aboriginal students. This year, Coen and Hope Vale have recorded the highest attendance of...

Why Australian teachers don't know how to teach phonics
The following article was written by University teacher-educator, Professor Misty Adoniou and published in the Independent Education magazine that has a readership among teachers of many thousands. We scratch our heads and ask ourselves how it is possible that our University Schools and Faculties of...

Re: good news for indigenous Australians
Following article is for those who don’t subscribe to The Australia. Also, I included the first responses from readers to this article. The second response from ‘Shaun’ is me. I use my husband’s computer to access The Australian and it only recognises his name. So 1950’s! Terry Redman’s Western Aust...

Brilliant opinion piece from Noel Pearson
NT offers a template for indigenous school reform • NOEL PEARSON • THE AUSTRALIAN • AUGUST 01, 2015 The great 17th-century English essayist Samuel Johnson famously told his biographer Boswell, “Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea.” I feel the...
