'World Maps of the 25 Most Spoken Languages' - number 1 is English

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

I find it so ironic and tragic that the English language is the most widely used language and yet we have had to endure a long-lasting reading debate (known as the 'reading wars') regarding how best to teach reading and spelling in the English language - the very reason for the existence of the IFERI organisation and site!

See an overview of languages and where they're spoken via this feature via 'Far and Wide':

1. English — 1.5 Billion Speakers

The English language dates back to the 5th century AD, when Germanic tribes invaded the isle of Britain. Today, nearly 1.5 billion people speak it, including 480 million native English speakers. That's 20 percent of the world!

As the world's most commonly spoken language, English is also considered the official language of international business.
