What does the research (or lack of) REALLY show?

We're all guilty of resorting to the expression, 'Research shows...' in general conversation - or perhaps when we quote from some article in a magazine or item in the news media - or simply repeat what we have heard others say.

There is a worry, however, that programmes and practices can take on a life of their own without a proper basis in research - or glossy marketing and propaganda about a programme, or practice, misleads people into believing there is some validity that has not really been shown.
