'Union's phonics tests objections 'proven to be nonsense'' Rebecca Urban writes about Prof Anne Castles' research

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

Journalist Rebecca Urban's article in The Australian features a very important piece of research conducted by Professor Anne Castles and colleagues. It has relevance not only for Australia, but also for England where teachers' unions, and others, are critical of the adoption of a statutory Year One Phonics Check suggesting that the 'better readers' are disadvantaged because they try to 'make sense of' the nonsense words by turning them into real words.

This research finds that this is not the case:

I am cross-referencing this thread with the actual research paper and my response to criticism featured in Nursery World.
