Eng: Ministerial changes but phonics champion, Nick Gibb, stays with the Department for Education July 2019

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

Every time we have parliamentary changes in England (for example, national elections, changes of political party leaders, Cabinet re-shuffles), there are a number of us (those who are fully aware of the battle for the introduction of truly evidence-informed reading instruction) who 'hold our breath' to see what happens to the position Nick Gibb holds.

Here in England, former Prime Minister Theresa May has resigned to be replaced by the highly controversial Boris Johnson (24th July 2019). Thankfully, Nick Gibb retains his post as Minister for School Standards as noted in the Times Education Supplement (TES):
Phonics champion Nick Gibb stays at the DfE

The former accountant is best known for his relentless focus on the use of phonics to teach children to read.

In great contrast to the stability of Minister Nick Gibb's position, the role of Education Secretary has been filled by many people in quick succession over the years:
Gavin Williamson appointed education secretary

The minister in charge of implementing Johnson's priorities for schools will be the fifth education secretary in just over five years

Gavin Williamson has been named as the new education secretary by prime minister Boris Johnson.

The news comes after Damian Hinds this afternoon left the DfE and returned to the backbenches, ending a tenure of 18 months.

His successor is the fifth education secretary in the space of just over five years.

Michael Gove was demoted in July 2014, and was followed by Nicky Morgan, Justine Greening and Mr Hinds.

Here is the story reported in SchoolsWeek:
Nick Gibb to continue as schools minister
https://schoolsweek.co.uk/nick-gibb-to- ... -minister/
Nick Gibb, the long-serving schools minister who has been at the heart of education policy for the best part of a decade, will continue his tenure at the Department for Education.

Gibb has already served a combined six years and five months in the role of minister of state for schools, and seven years and two months’ service at the department.
Nick Gibb has circulated his news via Twitter:
Delighted to have been asked by the Prime Minister to continue as Schools Minister pushing forward our agenda to raise standards in schools so that we give every child the knowledge and ability to succeed in an exciting post Brexit global future.
