Although we have already flagged up Gordon Askew's excellent blog via the 'Education Blogs & Websites of Interest' forum, I decided it would be invaluable flagged up on this forum too.
All Gordon's posts are pertinent to some current problems impeding progress in children's reading ability and are therefore important to read.
Gordon's day to day work is in England but of course Gordon's interest and concern for literacy education is international.

It is notable that if we haven't yet sorted out how best to train, teach and practise reading in the English language in England yet, what hope is there for teaching English in more challenging scenarios such as English being taught as an additional language or in 'whole language' dominated contexts (meaning, not properly informed by research findings) or for learners with special needs!
