Here is an IFERI forum thread featuring my thoughts on use of nonsense words in general phonics provision as distinct from their use for decoding/phonics assessment purposes:

I've resurrected 'The Naked Emperor' blog which I started years ago but did not keep up with.

This includes guest-posts, posts about my phonics programmes, posts challenging the state of play in England - in other words, a wide variety of themes.

At the time of writing this post, this is my latest theme - a very, very serious one in my opinion - politically and educationally unacceptable:

The Education Endowment Foundation is actively undermining the Government in England and here is an evidence trail to show this
https://debbiehepplewhite.com/the-educa ... show-this/

Further, I've started a thread via the IFERI forum 'Around the World: News and Events' featuring this issue:

In the light of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have provided a range of various resources which are well worth investigating:

At the bottom of the page, you will find a pre-recorded free webinar with full course notes that I pack full of information for phonics provision.

Thank you to Dr Kathryn Garforth who invited me to write a guest post for her blog:
Does CVC refer to letters or sounds?
https://www.garfortheducation.com/cvc/? ... GwJsU44Oqg
The need to distinguish between consonant letters and vowel letters through teaching about ‘the alphabet’ compared to consonant sounds and vowel sounds through teaching about the ‘alphabetic code

Teachers need to teach about both ‘the alphabet’ and about ‘the alphabetic code’ and distinguish between them. In order to do this, teachers themselves need to be clear about their differences and their uses, and their overlap.

In teaching about the alphabet and the alphabetic code, this involves the terminology of consonants and vowels, letters and sounds, and the use of abbreviations based on capital letters C and V.
I've added some extra detail and links to my original blog for Kathryn which can be read here:

Here is a recorded webinar provided by Abi Steel and me hosted by the publisher 'Rising Stars'. It features 'Pace and Progression' - for introducing the letter/s-sound correspondences of the English alphabetic code:

If you scroll down to the bottom of this homepage below, you will find a recorded webinar featuring 'Handwriting' - I'm very concerned about the growing trend (or should I say 'fad') of teaching beginners (4 to 5 year olds in England's context) a form of print letters with 'lead-in' joins from the outset. I suggest this is seriously misguided so I tackle this issue via this webinar:

Here is another video of me describing the teaching of handwriting with further suggestions - including for older children:

I have written a series of blog posts featuring teacher-training and reading instruction in the context of England's developments over the past 23 years (from 1998) with the last post, No. 3, culminating in an admission by the current Department for Education in England that 'Letters and Sounds' (DfES, 2017) was 'never a full Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programme' which I have said all along:
