Brief history of phonics and reading instruction

Post by Debbie_Hepplewhite »

Thanks to Molly de Lemos for drawing attention to this interesting 'potted' history:
Did you know that in 1655, French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented synthetic phonics. (Rodgers, 2001) Pascal's synthetic phonics referred to an approach associated with the teaching of reading in which phonemes (sounds) associated with particular graphemes (letters) are pronounced in isolation and blended together (synthesised).

For a brief (potted) history of the use of phonics in the teaching of reading see https://prezi.com/49qircw8p0qk/history- ... -timeline/

Or for a slightly longer history see https://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Pho ... ading.html
