The work of Rhona Johnston and Joyce Watson informed the independent national review into the teaching of early reading (2005-6) undertaken by Sir Jim Rose and a team of inspectors in England's context. Sir Jim's report is world-renowned and highly influential in developments in England's context including the adoption of the Simple View of Reading model (Gough and Tunmer 1986) which informs the teaching profession about the two main processes of being a reader in the full sense.
