This short video featuring Dr Jennifer Buckingham describes the aims of the Five from Five project in Australia and why establishing Five from Five is necessary:

Please spread the word not only about the Five from Five organisation's activities - but also wherever you suspect schools are not yet providing explicit, sequential teaching of the Five Pillars of Literacy (this could be in any country where the English language is taught for reading and writing):

1) Phonemic awareness (smallest sounds in speech)
2) Systematic Synthetic Phonics (explicit, direct phonics teaching that includes developing phonemic awareness)
3) Fluency (sufficient repetition to build up automaticity, fluency and confidence)
4) Vocabulary (teach explicitly)
5) Comprehension (spoken language and reading comprehension)
